As the summer heat settles in and the temperatures continue to rise, ensuring your baby stays cool and comfortable becomes a top priority for all parents. The heat can make anyone feel lousy, and as a parent, it’s very nerve-wracking when your baby can’t communicate with you exactly how the heat is bothering them.

Babies are more sensitive to heat than adults, and proper precautions can make a significant difference in their well-being. Here are some essential tips to keeping your baby safe during hot weather:

Tips for Keeping Your Baby Safe During Hot Weather:

Dress Appropriately:

  • Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton. Opt for light colors that reflect rather than absorb heat.
  • Hats with wide brims or caps that shade the face and neck are essential when outdoors.

Keep Hydrated:

  • Breastfeed or offer formula more frequently than usual to keep your baby hydrated. If your baby is over six months old and has started solids, offer water between feeds.
  • Look for signs of dehydration such as dry lips, fewer wet diapers, or fussiness.

Create a Cool Environment:

  •  Use fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors. Ensure fans are out of reach and not blowing directly on your baby.
  •  If air conditioning is not available, use a cool-mist humidifier or place a bowl of ice in front of a fan to create a makeshift cooler.

Limit Outdoor Activities During Peak Heat:

  •  Avoid going outdoors during the hottest part of the day (usually between 10 AM and 4 PM). Opt for early mornings or late afternoons for outings.
  •  Use a stroller with a sunshade or attach a lightweight, breathable blanket over the stroller to shield your baby from direct sunlight.

Use Sun Protection:

  •  Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to exposed areas of your baby’s skin. Choose a sunscreen specifically formulated for babies with physical blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
  •  Keep in mind that babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight, so use clothing and shade as the primary forms of sun protection.

Be Mindful of Overheating:

  •   Check your baby frequently for signs of overheating, such as flushed cheeks, rapid breathing, or fussiness.
  •   If your baby feels hot to the touch, gently remove layers of clothing or move to a cooler environment.

Cool Baths and Damp Cloths:

  •  Offer your baby a lukewarm bath or sponge bath to help lower their body temperature. Avoid cold water, as it can cause shivering and further increase body heat.
  •  Dampen a washcloth with cool water and gently wipe your baby’s skin to provide relief from heat.

Never Leave Your Baby in a Car; We All Know This, but It Bears Repeating

  •  Temperatures inside a parked car can rise rapidly, even with the windows cracked. Never leave your baby alone in a car, even for a short time.
  • As tired parents, it’s easy to forget – set a reminder for yourself (yes, it can happen to you). Put your purse or shoe in the backseat to ensure you won’t forget.

Monitor for Heat-related Illnesses:

  •  Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, such as high body temperature, rapid pulse, nausea, or confusion.
  •  Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect your baby is experiencing a heat-related illness.

Trust Your Instincts:

  •  Every baby is different, and you know your baby best. If you’re concerned about your baby’s comfort or well-being in hot weather, trust your instincts and seek advice from your healthcare provider.

    Don’t forget about yourself, mama!:

    •  Make sure you also stay cool, and hydrated! If you’re nursing you may find you baby wants to nurse more often in hot weather, and that can take a toll on you too. Stay cool and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Always take good care of yourself (physically and mentally – this hot weather can be draining in so many ways)

By following these simple yet crucial tips, you can ensure that your baby stays safe and comfortable during hot weather. With a little preparation and vigilance, you can enjoy the summer months while keeping your baby cool and happy. Here’s to a safe and enjoyable summer with your little one!

The term “pelvic health” refers to a growing practice within physiotherapy. For physiotherapist Erica Gambarotto, it’s a specialty that was born out of personal experience. Originally trained as an orthopedic physio, Erica became alarmed by the drastic changes in her body while pregnant with twins. “I was running to the washroom all the time, amongst other embarrassing bodily malfunctions,” she recalls. “I started taking professional courses in pelvic physiotherapy, initially with the goal of treating myself. Turns out, it is a fascinating area of study, and I haven’t looked back.”

The twins are now 6 years old, and Erica practices pelvic health physiotherapy at Lifemark Physiotherapy. She estimates that at least half her clients are pregnant women or new moms seeking treatment post-delivery. Here, she answers some common questions about pregnancy’s effect on the area known as your “pelvic floor.”

What is the pelvic floor?

It’s a group of muscles in three layers, spanning the area between your sitting bones, pubic bone and tailbone. These muscles play an important role in:

  • Holding up your pelvic organs (bowel, bladder and uterus)
  • Providing continence (the ability to control elimination of urine and feces)
  • Reaching orgasm
  • Stabilizing your core
  • Acting as a pump to remove lymphatic drainage
What is going to happen to my pelvic floor muscles when I’m pregnant?

Similar to a sling, the pelvic floor helps to support the developing baby within the pelvis. As fetal size and weight increases, this area gets challenged like never before. When the pelvic floor (and surrounding) muscles are not functioning to the best of their ability, an expectant mother may experience symptoms such as pubic bone pain, sacroiliac joint pain, hip pain, painful sex, perineal heaviness and incontinence.

Is there anything I can proactively do to prevent pelvic floor issues later?

Pelvic physiotherapy treatment can occur during pregnancy as long as there are no concerns with the placenta, the pregnancy is not deemed high-risk, and the attending midwife or obstetrician is in favour of it. Research shows that pelvic physiotherapy during pregnancy can help shorten the second stage of labor (the pushing stage), ease pregnancy-related pain and reduce the chances of urinary incontinence postpartum.

What about Kegel exercises?

A common misconception about pelvic floor physiotherapy is that it simply involves teaching women how to do a Kegel exercise properly. Kegels are useful, but they are not necessarily the answer to every problem. If your pelvic floor is tight and over-active, doing extra muscle contractions may actually make things worse. The goal is to achieve proper recruitment and balance of the pelvic muscles.

How long will it take for my pelvic floor to recover post-delivery?

Several factors will influence a mother’s recovery time, such as the number of babies delivered, duration of pushing, degree of tearing and medical interventions used (such as forceps, vacuum, episiotomy, or C-section). Each mother’s recovery and journey will be unique to her circumstances. A physiotherapist specializing in pelvic health will do an individualized assessment and create a customized program of exercises and/or stretches.

What are some signs that I should seek help for my pelvic floor?

Dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles can cause a number of symptoms, including:

  • Stress incontinence (leaking with sneezing, coughing or jumping)
  • Urge incontinence (leaking after sudden urgency)
  • Painful sex
  • Pain in the perineum, tailbone, sacroiliac joints, hips or lower abdomen
Do I really need treatment, or is this just “the new normal” after having a baby?

Peeing your pants, though common after childbirth, is not something you have to live with. The same principle applies to ongoing pelvic pain, chronic back pain, or discomfort during sex several months postpartum. These issues can be treated, so please do not suffer in silence. When in doubt about your recovery and symptoms, always bring it up with your family doctor or gynecologist. As in other areas of motherhood, always trust your instincts.

When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I quickly decided that we wouldn’t find out the gender. I didn’t want to know. I liked the idea of being surprised during birth and for some reason, finding out kind of felt like I was cheating. We learned a lot about not finding out gender of baby.

I soon discovered that my view was not the norm and that the subject of finding out versus not finding out was a hot topic, guaranteed to bring out strong opinions and a whole lot of debate.

For the remainder of the pregnancy, I had so many people tell me I was crazy and that there was no reason to wait. I totally understand the temptation to find out and I definitely don’t judge those who choose to know, but once I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl (surprise!), I felt even more strongly that I had made the right decision.

I know this post won’t change the minds of mamas who are absolutely convinced that finding out their baby’s sex is a must. But if anyone out there is considering keeping it a surprise, here are my 10 reasons why it’s TOTALLY worth it:

  1. All your newborn clothes will be gender neutral (so they can be used again, no matter what).

I think it would be a real bummer to have a girl and then have a boy next and not be able to use 90% of the baby clothes you already own. Every single piece of clothing I bought or was gifted before my daughter was born was gender-neutral, and they were no less cute! There are tons of adorable options outside of the pink and blue realm, but if everyone knows what you’re having, they end up buying you really gender-specific items. Save yourself the expense of having to repurchase newborn clothes! Even if you’re not planning on having another baby, it means you can hand down your items to anyone, no matter their baby’s gender.

  2. People actually gift you stuff other than clothes.

People love gifting cutesy clothing. It gets a big reaction and let’s face it, it’s fun to buy. But if the gender isn’t known, people are way more likely to forgo clothes and instead buy you gear that you ACTUALLY need. When you have your first baby, you’ll be drowning in baby onesies. In fact, you’ll have so many, you’ll likely never get to use them all before your baby grows out of them. Things like swings, carriers, bottles and diaper bags are costly and way more useful to you long term.

  3. It makes the birth announcement just that: an announcement.

    baby name announcement

For me, not knowing what I was having made those first calls to family and friends that much sweeter. I will forever remember the cries of joy from our loved ones with the “It’s a….” phone call. I’ve also been on the receiving end of them and there’s nothing like the anticipation of waiting for the birth and the announcement of what the baby is. It makes that call even more exciting for everyone, the parents and the receivers of the news!

  4. It’s an exercise in delayed gratification.

In today’s world, technology gives us the ability to know everything right here, right now. People aren’t even waiting for the sonogram anymore, now they can pay to have a blood test that confirms gender mere days into their pregnancy! It’s great that we’ve come so far with these technological advances, but it also means we don’t really know how to wait anymore. Finding out the sex of your baby isn’t a need, it’s a want. I loved forcing myself to relax, wait and take a “whatever will be, will be” approach to my pregnancy. Finding out kind of felt like peeking at the gift before opening it on Christmas Day. Sure, there were moments that I felt tempted to know, but I was fairly at ease with not knowing and it just gave me that little bit of extra motivation when I was finally pushing those babies out!

  5. It keeps you from buying stuff you don’t need.

It’s hard enough to resist buying every little floral patterned swaddle or truck themed bib once you HAVE a baby. Not knowing makes you wait a little longer on those unnecessary impulse purchases and once you’ve had the baby, your focus isn’t on all the ‘stuff’ anymore.

  6. There are no moments of disappointment.

Of course we’re all happy with whatever baby we’re blessed with and of course, a healthy baby is everyone’s biggest wish, but there’s no denying that we all have a tiny hope one way or the other. Maybe there are lots of boys in your extended family and you’re anticipating having the first girl. Maybe you already have 2 girls and are hoping your third baby will be a boy. Maybe your husband is vocally rooting for one or the other. I’ve heard a few women admit that they had a moment of post-sonogram disappointment. And while I’m sure it didn’t last long, knowing ahead of time does mean you’ll have to process the news.

I was secretly hoping for a boy with my first, and you know what? When my husband yelled “It’s a girl!” and she was placed on my chest, there was no way I was feeling ANY disappointment. Gender let-down is NO threat to the adrenaline and pure joy you feel after giving birth. You’re instantly in love and it’s guaranteed to be the happiest moment of your life, no matter what.

  7. Nobody asks about names.

I’ve recently heard so many pregnant friends and family members complain that they don’t want to share the baby’s name but everyone asks, so they’re constantly having to fend people off. I didn’t even realize this was a thing! When someone asks you “What are you having?” and you tell them you don’t know, they just don’t bother investigating further!

  8. It keeps people guessing (and really ticks them off).

I was shocked at how annoyed some people got with my decision to not find out the sex! I had family members begging me to have the ultrasound tech write it down so they could know, even if I didn’t. I had friends desperately trying to convince me that I should find out and was absolutely out of my mind for waiting. It’s kind of fun to push the envelope and watch everyone squirm over your decision. Plus, it makes for some entertaining (and sometimes heated) conversations!

  9. Knowing the gender isn’t going to change anything.

It doesn’t make a damn difference. Whether you know or not, the same baby is going to come out. And don’t listen to the cries of “you can’t properly prepare if you don’t know!”. Babies need love, food and sleep. Painting the nursery blue instead of gray isn’t going to make the sleepless nights any easier. Cribs will be bought and car seats will be assembled, regardless of whether the baby’s sex is known or not.

  10. The moment you find out will be one you NEVER forget.

From the dawn of time until a mere 30ish years ago, women had no choice but to learn the sex of their baby at the birth, and I really think it was designed that way for a reason. Obviously giving birth is an unforgettable experience regardless, but there is something transcendental about discovering WHO your baby is in the moment they make that journey out of your body to begin their own life. No preconceived notions, no name preassigned. With the births of both of my children, the moment I met them felt so spiritual that it just seems right to have done it with the anticipation nature intended me to have.

At the birth of my second child, that perfectly round baby was immediately placed on my chest and I looked down to finally discover what I was having. I cried, “It’s a boy!”. My husband began sobbing tears of joy. “We got a boy!” he yelled, over and over. At that very second, my amazing midwife motioned to my mom to pick up our camera and to snap a picture of the moment.

We will cherish it forever.

Packing your hospital bag is an important and exciting job before your baby arrives! A well-organized hospital bag ensures you have all the essentials for yourself, your newborn, and your partner.  Being prepared ahead of time will allow you to feel less stressed out in the weeks leading up to the baby’s arrival, and once in the hospital, it will make your stay much more comfortable (and when in the hospital, we need all the comfort we can get!). Many new parents turn to the internet to ask what to pack in their hospital bag for their 2024 birth.

Firstly, make sure you pack your hospital bag ahead of time. It often seems daunting, so we put it off, but believe me… you do not want to get caught off-guard and end up at the hospital without a bag! The hilarious (in hindsight) items your partner will pull together in a panicked whirlwind will not help the stressful situation!

So, pack and be ready to go at 36 weeks!

Install your car seat at the same time as packing your hospital bag!

A task that should go alongside the hospital bag is the car seat! You really shouldn’t have one ready without the other. This is a task that you’ll want to take your time and care with (i.e., read the instructions carefully!), so again, you don’t want to leave this up to your partner to do in a tired fog!

What kind of hospital bag is best?

Firstly, something that is easy to carry! Many new parents are opting for a carry-on-sized wheelie suitcase for mom and baby. The double zip-up sides mean you can fully open it and easily see inside (rather than rooting around a deep bag).

While over the shoulder might seem easiest, it can slide forward when you’re bending over (and bop your baby in the head as you pick them or car seat up, whoops).

Your partner should be responsible for packing their own bag. There is also a likelihood that you may get separated (for example, if mom needs to remain in a hospital bed, and dad and baby head to the NICU). Your partner will want their own items with them, so sharing a bag won’t work.

How to label your items and bag:

Make sure that your bag is well labeled, as well as your items inside. Especially if you don’t have a private room, it’s too easy for things to go missing or get into the wrong hands (especially all that new cute stuff you’ve just purchased for baby!)

We suggest these adorable labels and bag tags! Once done with your hospital bag, these are perfect for your diaper bag!

What to pack in your hospital bag for a 2024 birth:
  • Paperwork
This includes your photo ID, health/ medical card/ insurance card, and plan details.
  • Your Birth Plan
Depending on whether you have a midwife or an ob-gyn, you’ll want a copy of your birth plan so that everyone understands your ideal birth and your priorities.
  • An Open Mind
Okay, you’re only packing this metaphorically. But if you’re packing a birth plan, you also need to pack an open mind. Things change, urgencies change, and you sometimes need to be flexible. Remember, your baby doesn’t know the plan and may have their own ideas, and you may need to adjust accordingly for the health and safety of you and your baby. So, pack that open mind!
  • Comfy clothes:
    -A comfortable nightgown
    -A robe
-Slippers (don’t make these your favorite pair…things after birth can get drippy, and with gravity… you get the idea. Don’t pack your favorite pair because you don’t want them to get ruined.)
-Sweatpants or pajama pants (be VERY aware of the waistband!) If you need to have a c-section, you’ll want to choose pants that can sit comfortably up high on your waist and not too tight.
-Big underwear- like, real big again so that the waistband isn’t too tight, and they can sit nice and high around your belly.
-Socks, the hospital can be cold (see the note about slippers… don’t bring your best pair)
  • Personal Items:
-glasses/ contact lens/ lens solution etc.
-lip balm (hospitals can be very dry)
    -toothbrush/ toothpaste
-hair brush and lots of hair ties  (you’ll want your hair out of your face during labor)
    -dry shampoo
    -soap, skincare, moisturizer
-Maternity pads  (even if you’re having a c-section!)
  • Nursing gear if you plan to breastfeed:
If you plan on breastfeeding, you may want to bring the below items.
    -nursing bra
    -breast pads
    -nipple cream
    -feeding support pillow
  • If you plan to formula feed, this article is quite informative. Every hospital is different and will have different supplies on hand for you, so it’s best to contact your midwife or hospital and clarify what you may be required to bring.
  • Misc.
-Ear plugs (hospitals can be loud, and getting sleep will be important!)
    -prescription medicine you may take
    -phone charger
    -Music and headphones
-Preloaded/downloaded movies or books on your device.
-Your own pillow or blanket, or other items that may provide you some comfort
  • Snacks:
    -Granola/ energy bars/nuts & seeds etc.
    -Water bottle
What to pack in your hospital bag for baby:
  • Baby Clothing
    -onesies
    -mittens
    -hats
-A unique and cozy “going home” outfit
  • Receiving Blankets
    -2 or 3.
-Your hospital may not allow you to take home your traditional blue and pink striped receiving blanket (I sure hope it doesn’t accidentally fall into your bag)
  • Diapers and Wipes
You may want to check and see what your hospital provides. If you stay in the NICU, your diapers are often provided; otherwise, you may have to provide your own.
baby name announcement
Adorable wooden disc with your baby’s name printed on it is a simple and oh so lovely way to announce your baby!

*Pro tip- get samples of different brands of diapers, wipes, and creams before the baby arrives (baby shows, welcome wagons, etc., will often provide samples, or you can reach out to the company). This way, you can try a few different types and see which works best for your baby before you commit to purchasing large quantities.

  • Your Birth Announcement!
If you intend to announce your birth immediately through your social media, consider using this adorable birth announcement sign. It’s an easy and cute way to announce your baby to the world!
Items for your partner to pack in their hospital bag:

-Snack for themselves (so they don’t dip into yours)
-Change of clothes
-Phone, camera, and chargers
-Book or something for the downtime
-Thank you cards and pen (if you choose to provide them to nurses, midwives, support staff etc.)
-Washbag with toiletries
-Glasses, contact lenses, etc.
-Pillow and blanket if you need to stay overnight.

April is Cesarean Awareness Month. Considering I’ve had six of the damn things, I thought I’d take some time to share my learnings. My first C-section was an emergency, and I was not a great candidate for a VBAC with my daughter a mere 15 months later. While I had the easiest pregnancies known to mama-kind, these babies were not going to come out any other way! Here’s my advice for mamas who are facing multiple C-sections.

Remember that Cesareans don’t get harder every time

My experience is that each one is unique, as is recovery. My worst recovery was after my fourth. The fifth and sixth were okay! So, if you had a tough recovery the first time, don’t be too worried that you’ll have the same experience in subsequent Cesareans

Get out of bed!

I found that the sooner I got out of bed after the surgery, the better my recovery was. I thought my nurse was very mean for forcing me out of bed when I was in pain, but she saved me a lot of pain later. Be gentle with yourself, but do try to get moving as soon as possible.

Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself

Every time I went for a Cesarean, the surgical team wanted to put the catheter in BEFORE I had the spinal. I advocated strongly to have that order switched around and I’m glad I did! Don’t be afraid to speak up!

Prep your big kids

Prep your other kids. When you are recovering from a Cesarean, you can’t be lifting toddlers into cribs and car seats. Pull out the step stools and train them before baby comes. Get good at ignoring messes. You do not have to pick-up that laundry basket on the way up the stairs. Ignore it. Recovery is more important than a tidy house. Don’t be afraid to get help: accept meals, allow people to take your other children for the day and take up every kind offer that comes your way!

Make a plan to calm your nerves

I don’t blame you! Talk to your medical professionals and get their opinions. Before I was pregnant with my sixth, I had a consult to see what kind of shape my uterus was in, what the plan would be if I went into labour and discussed risks. All worked out just fine.

Ideally, I would have loved it if my babies were not surgically extracted from my uterus, but that was not in the cards for me. At the end of the day, I’m just happy that my six children arrived safely and lovingly into this crazy world.

A baby shower, a sprinkle or even a sip-and-see; call it what you will etiquette states they’re generally gift giving events. While showers can be bursting with love for a new mom, they are also a tricky social event to maneuver. It’s important to remember, all mothers are not created equally. If there is no shower registry (like this ideal list) or you decide to go rogue and avoid the registry there are a few considerations to be made when finding the perfect baby shower gift.

The personality of the new parents.

If mom is the sentimental type, you may look at a more traditional gift or keepsake. If she’s the fashionista Instagram mom, cute matching outfits will be loved. The more practical moms (raises hand) might rather have everyone pitch in for a good stroller, a baby carrier, or even cases of diapers!

Never underestimate the gift of help!

As a mom of six, the more children I had, the less actual “gifts” I wanted. The best “presents” were people taking my toddlers and pre-schoolers to the park to let me have some time alone with the baby. My friend recently had triplets and I set up a meal train. A meal was dropped to her house every night for three months. She said having dinner served during that newborn phase with triplets was like a wish come true.

Think beyond the infant stage.

Parents sometimes forget to think beyond the baby phase. Infants are tiny for about FIVE MINUTES! Think about what products and clothing items you might want when they are 18 months old. Investigate what friends with older babies and children are using. Often parents are overwhelmed with gifts for the first 6 months, but after that find themselves without the essentials they need.

Your own go-to’s

Moms make the best recommendations! I know some of my favourite products came at the advice of other moms in my village. If you have a go-to item, you can’t live without buy it for a new mom and let them know how much you love yours! I recently purchased a Stokke Tripp Trapp Chair for a new mom. My kids STILL use theirs as tweens and teens!

Stay safe by buying a gift from into one of these safe categories:

  • Essentials

Curate a baby medicine kit, lots of new parents overlook simple drug store items that will be a lifesaver in those first couple of months. Fill a basket or storage container with essential items like a baby thermometer, vapor rub, baby sunscreen, Vaseline, baby powder, nasal aspirator, teething medicine, wipes, and liquid vitamin drops.

  • Personalized

If the new parents already know the name of their child, gift them with these fun personalized rainbow crayons. These can act as décor in the nursery at first, and then when the child is ready to start using them. And of course, baby will be going to daycare in the blink of an eye, so Mabel’s Labels is a must have.

  • Unique

It’s never too early to start sharing the love of reading with child. Fill a basket with books from a variety of topics. These can vary from fairy tales, poetry, science to social justice, and the classics like Goodnight Moon and The Giving Tree. A very special book I recently discovered is Words of Wonder which is perfect for new parent and baby. In each book, write a note to the baby with words of encouragement or life advice that relate to the book’s message. These books will help fill the shelves of their first library, and they will also act as words of encouragement and wisdom as the little one grows up.

And most importantly…

Whatever gift I give, I insist that mom just thank me verbally and NOT send a “thank you” card. Letting a tired new mom off the hook for some of the traditional etiquette is a gift in itself. Above all, I support mama taking time for a nap instead of writing “thank you” cards!  Let me know your perfect baby shower gift!

You can never go wrong with this Baby Shower Label Gift Pack!

Is a baby on the way? Congrats!! Your life is about to become much more beautiful (and exhausting). Sharing the news of your little bundle’s arrival is probably on your mind; friends and family will be eagerly awaiting the exciting news.

Parents are planning to make the perfect announcement well ahead of time. But it can be hard to know what to say, when, and how to say it. Especially within a few hours of birth – you’re feeling overwhelmed and probably exhausted, so you’re probably not feeling very creative. With social media, it has never been easier to announce your baby’s arrival – but you still need to make it perfect!

The etiquette around birth announcements on social media is a little wishy-washy, so we want to ensure you share the news flawlessly. Here is a list of birth announcement ideas, captions and etiquette.

We must keep in mind multi-generations who may not be on social media and respect their role (nobody wants grandma to find out after the neighbours down the street).

Etiquette Tips for sharing the news

  1. Always announce to immediate family first, with a phone call. This is respectful to the members of your family who will play a key role in babies’ life. If these members aren’t at the birth, it’s a good rule to make sure they receive a phone call – before ANY other announcements have been made. Some things in life require a call, not a text, and this is one of them.
  2. Dads and partners- never share the news online without talking with your partner and getting their approval.
  3. NEVER share a picture of a new mom that she hasn’t approved of!
Etiquette Tip if you’re not the parents:

Never share photos without permission.   With sharing on social media becoming such second nature to everyone, it’s hard to forget that not everyone shares online. Many parents are choosing to keep their kids off social media, which needs to be respected. Parents are being highly cautious about what they share, as well as the privacy settings of their accounts. So, while they may share a photo of their baby online- it isn’t an invitation for you to do the same. Your connections are not their connections, and they don’t know your privacy settings unless you get permission; never share photos online, even if the parents already have.

What if things don’t go as planned?

This can happen, and it’s never planned and always catches parents off-guard. A NICU stay can occur if the baby arrives early or has some complications. It can be a tricky area to navigate when it comes to announcing. Nobody can tell you the best etiquette here, it’s too personal, and each story is different. Some people post the birth announcement with a note stating they look forward to bringing the baby home. Other families announce the baby’s arrival the day they “graduate” from the NICU. Whatever the situation- only you will know what is best for you and your family.

What we can stress: If you are not the parents, no matter how excited you are, do not post or share the information. It’s very poor taste. Instead, please speak with the parents, and follow their lead.

Choosing a photo:

Another BIG consideration is the photo! It’s the first thing people will see! We LOVE the idea of this Wooden Baby Name Announcement – it’s the perfect and simplistic way to introduce your baby to the world. You can pre-order the plaque and include it into your diaper bag. It’s a super simple way of creating a cute welcome photo!

Traditional announcement:

As a first-time parent, it can be hard to know what you need. When finances are tight, it starts to feel like you may be buying things you don’t need. Often this is the case; other times, you shock yourself with how many you need (I’m looking at you burp cloths!). You’ll receive many of the same gifts (blankets!), and sometimes you don’t get the gift you want. Here is a list of the must-haves versus the nice-to-haves. Plus, a few don’t bother items.

If your budget allows for the nice-to-haves, they’ll make your life a little easier. But if you’re making these purchases on a budget, you’ll manage fine with these must-have baby items.

Here is a FREE printable version of the list below.

baby items checklist

Must-have:
Bassinet or crib
Crib mattress
Mattress protector
Bedding
Baby Monitor (unnecessary for smaller houses and apartments)

Nice to haves/Makes a great gift
Bassinet (nice to have, but your baby will outgrow it in a hot minute)
Humidifier
Rocking chair
Mobile and fancy décor (makes a great gift- people love to purchase pretty items!)

Don’t bother:
Crib bumpers – They’ve proven themselves to be dangerous, and they’re useless, your baby will be fine.

Changing table – Once baby is rolling it’s safest to change on the floor or your bed, plus it’s easier to not be committed to one room for changing. Get yourself multiple changing pads and leave them around the house – you can change on the couch, the floor, or wherever is most convenient.

DIAPER CHANGING:

Must-haves:
Diapers (2 packs to begin)
Healing/diaper rash ointment
Changing pad (or towel)
Wipes and washcloths (10)

Nice to haves/Makes a great gift
Diaper pail

Don’t bother:
Pee teepee
Wipes warmer (even the Queen of England never had a wipes warmer. Your baby will be fine)

CLOTHING:

Must-haves:
Onesies (7 or more)
Rompers (2-4)
Pyjamas/sleeping gowns (7 or more)
Sun hat

Weather dependent:
Wool hat
Mittens
Snowsuit
Car seat cover

Nice to haves/Makes a great gift
Scratch-proof mittens (this is the type of item that you only buy once you realize whether you need it or not)
Shirt & pants/shorts sets/ cute dresses

Don’t bother:
Baby clothing hangers – you’ll likely just be folding and putting into a drawer, so as a newborn, don’t bother with the teeny tiny hangers.
Socks – Ok, maaaybe 1 or 2 pairs, but most baby clothing has feet. Socks don’t stay on and good luck finding them. If you do buy socks- make sure they all match, because you don’t want to waste your time matching pair.

BATHING:

Must-haves:
washcloths (5 or 6)
Baby soap and shampoo
baby brush (if babe has hair!)
Nail clippers or file

Nice to haves/Makes a great gift
Infant tub
Hooded towels

Don’t bother:
Baby powder (why do they even make this still?)

OUT AND ABOUT:

Must-haves:
Name Labels– because nobody wants a germy mix-up! Plus, you picked such a great name, show it off!
Baby car seat
Stroller
Baby carrier/sling
Diaper bag

Nice to haves/Makes a great gift
Insulated milk carrier (otherwise, just use lunch bag and some ice packs)

BABY and MAMA CARE:

Must-haves:
Infant playmat
Pacifiers (and these!)
Thermometer
Nasal aspirator (this seems like you don’t need it- until you do)
Infant medicine (just a few basics to cover you until you can see a doctor: saline spray, infant pain meds, ointments)

Nice to haves/Makes a great gift
Nursing pillow
Swing or vibrating/ rocking seat

FEEDING:

This list will change for everyone, some babies may need a nipple guard, some mamas might want to supplement. Here is a basic idea of what you need to be with, but your list may grow as your feeding needs change and you and baby find your own groove.

Must-haves for breastfed babies:
Burp cloths (6 or more)
Breast milk storage bags
Breast pump
Nursing bra

Must-haves for bottle fed babies:
Baby bottles (8 or more)
Bottle cleaning brush or a dishwasher basket
Formula (for a month)
Cotton bibs (6 or more)
Milk storage bags (if using expressed milk)
Baby bottle labels

Nice to haves/Makes a great gift for bottle fed babies:
Bottle sterilizer
Bottle warmer

Feeding is the most difficult to buy for, it’s best to get your journey started knowing you’ll need to make some runs to the store to try a new product or get what you need. Don’t stress about the feeding list, it’s going to change, and you can’t plan ahead for it.

Here is a great read if you’re struggling with baby bottles!

If you’ve read through the list, you’re likely feeling overwhelmed, well, welcome to parenthood! Kidding aside, this is a suggested list, everyone’s situation and priorities are different, and you’ll ease into what works best for you and your family. Regardless of what you buy – one thing is certain; parenthood will bring you many ups and downs, but the ups will be the moments you remember and cherish forever.

As any pregnant mama knows, packing a hospital bag is an overwhelming task. There’s so much anticipation and nervousness tied to it, and if you’re about be a first-time mom, you really don’t know what you’ll end up using or needing.

I scoured dozens YouTube videos and blogs posts before having my first baby for lists of what to pack in a hospital bag and we ended up bringing two huge duffel bags to the hospital of stuff I was told I would “need”. The reality? Those bags sat completely untouched the whole time we were there. So, when I had my second baby, I packed one small little gym bag with JUST the essentials. It was easy to transport and easy to unpack once I was home again.

I’m not a high-maintenance gal. When I have a baby, I leave the hospital in my adult diaper and sweatpants. I am not putting on makeup or doing my hair. I am not accessorizing. I am not dressing the baby in a cute and well-planned outfit or having a hospital room photo shoot. I am not bringing my own hospital gown (why do people do that?) and I am not having someone come to bank my baby’s cord blood or encapsulate my placenta. Truthfully, after the births of both my children, I needed very few things. The hospital provided most of the medical necessities and if something came up that I unexpectedly needed. My husband could just hop in the car and go get it.

So, if you’re a low-key gal like me, read on for a realistic hospital bag list that comes straight from experience.

My Bare-Minimum Must Haves:

Huge, super-comfortable underwear – Buy a pack of soft, cotton granny panties. They do not need to be cute. Bring 2 or 3 pairs in case you need them, but you’ll probably spend all your time in the AMAZING diapers they provide to you during your stay.

Large pads (The biggest you can find) – I suggest bringing a handful, but I only ever used these when it was time to go home.

1 to 2 outfits for the baby and 1 pair baby socks – My babies always stayed unclothed while we were at the hospital. We were either doing skin-to-skin or they were swaddled. I only ever dressed them when it was time to go home. Keep the outfits simple and soft. The umbilical cord will likely stain the onesie and it’s hard to get their delicate tiny bodies into anything too complicated anyways. The hospital will give you a cute little knitted hat for going home.

Warm blanket for baby – To my last point. Don’t bother with sweaters or layers. Just bring a cozy blanket to wrap over them when you head home.

Comfortable pants and loose shirt or sweater – No Kate Middleton exit happening here. You’ll want something loose and soft for your sore, diapered bottom and your now rock-hard, swollen breasts.

Bathrobe – I loved having this for labour when I got chilly and for resting in the hospital bed once the baby was born. Some people bring pajamas, but I just stay in the hospital gown.

Cell phone charger– EASILY FORGOTTEN!

Cell phone and wallet – Obviously.

Camera (if you use one) – Otherwise just have your cell phone ready to go.

Warm socks or slippers – Hospitals are cold and you’ll want something on your feet when you’re doing laps during labour.

Diapers – You really only need a few just in case. The hospital will have diapers for your baby while you’re there.

Baby Soap- Why bring face wash, body wash, shampoo, conditioner AND wash for the baby? I didn’t even shower in the hospital either time! if you DO decide to scrub up, baby soap smells great, is super gentle and multi-purpose. You can use it to give the baby a bath of you want to (although the hospital will provide soap for that, too)

Hair tie/brush – This was the extent of my hospital beauty routine. I brushed out my post-labour rat’s nest and put my hair up out of my face.

Comfortable, roomy sports bra or nursing bra – As your milk comes in your breasts will change in size and believe me, you won’t want to be squeezing them into an underwire bra.

Lip balm – Your lips can get super dry from all that pushing and controlled breathing!

And that’s it! That should have you covered for what you really NEED. Some people bring things like a breast pump, makeup, snacks, music, a blow dryer, a pillow, books, etc, but I didn’t miss any of those items and if I had, it would have been easy enough to have someone go grab them for me. Happy packing!
