The school day is a whirlwind of activities, lessons, and social interactions, and by the time your kids get home, they might be feeling a mix of exhaustion and excitement, resulting in the dreaded after school-restraint collapse. Helping them wind down properly can make the transition from school to home smoother and more enjoyable for the entire family. Here’s a guide to helping your kids wind down and relax after school to kids decompress and recharge in a way that eases the effects of the after-school restraint collapse

Why do kids struggle with the after-school transition?

Kids often struggle with the after-school transition because it can be a big shift from the structured school environment to the more relaxed (or chaotic) atmosphere at home. The sudden change can be overwhelming after a day full of lessons, rules, and social interactions – the sudden ability to let it all go, and they release all the emotions they’ve been building up and holding onto all day.

They might feel tired, hungry, or need a break, which can make it hard to switch gears or even understand what exactly it is that they are feeling.

Plus, the sudden lack of routine or clear expectations after school can leave them feeling lost or unmotivated, unsure of what to do with themselves, and their big feelings, adding to the challenge of making a smooth transition.

Create a Consistent After-School Routine:

Establishing a predictable routine after school provides a sense of security and helps kids transition more smoothly from the school environment to home. Consistency is key here!

Try these steps:
  • Snack Time: Offer a healthy snack to replenish their energy. Fresh fruit, yogurt, or whole-grain crackers are excellent options – and can squash those hangry feelings!
  • Quiet Time: Designate a quiet period where kids can unwind. This might be time for reading, drawing, or even a little screen time.
  • Homework Time: Set a specific time for homework, preferably after a short break. Once they’ve relaxed and had a bite to eat, it’s easier to shift hears and re focus.
Encourage Physical Activity After-School:

Exercise is an excellent way for kids to release pent-up energy and reduce stress. Physical activity after school can help them feel more relaxed and ready for the evening

Incorporate these activities:
  • Outdoor Play: A game of tag, a bike ride, or a walk in the park can be invigorating.
  • Sports: If they’re involved in sports, practice or a casual game can be beneficial.
  • Rough-housing: Some kids like to rough house with siblings, and that’s fine too!
  • Dance Party: Turn on their favorite music and have a mini dance party to get their energy out in a fun way.Jump Battle: Kids love a jump battle; it’s even better if you have a trampoline!
Set Up a Calm Environment

The atmosphere in your home can greatly impact how easily your kids wind down. Creating a calming environment helps them transition from the busyness of school to a more relaxed state.

Consider these tips:
  • Quiet Spaces: Designate a quiet area in your home where they can retreat to if they need a break from stimulation.
  • Don’t bombard them with questions: Kids often don’t want to talk about their day, and that’s ok. Give them some time, then try these tips to get them to open up about their day.
  • Soothing Sounds: Soft background music or nature sounds can create a serene atmosphere.
  • Comfortable Setting: Ensure that their space is relaxed and free from clutter. A cozy area with pillows and blankets can be an inviting spot for them to veg out.
Implement Relaxation Techniques for Kids:

Teaching kids relaxation techniques can help them manage stress and improve their overall well-being. Simple practices can be easily incorporated into their after-school routine, and these can be lifelong tips and tricks they’ll rely on to relax even as adults. This is particularly helpful to kids who get anxious.

Try these relaxation techniques to help them wind down after school:
  • Deep Breathing: Teach them to take slow, deep breaths to calm their mind and body.
  • Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Guide them through tensing and relaxing different muscle groups. You can find kids-friendly videos to walk them through this on YouTube.
  • Yoga Exercises: Encourage them both focus, breath, and move their body! There are lots of great yoga videos for Kids, like this one where you can find a theme your kids loves!
Foster Creative Outlets as a Way for Kids to Wind Down After School:

Engaging in creative activities can be a great way for kids to express their feelings and unwind after a busy day. It also helps them develop their imagination and problem-solving skills, plus, is just a great way to relax!

Creative after-school ideas include:
  • Drawing and Coloring: Provide them with art supplies and most importantly, let them create freely!
  • Craft Projects: Simple crafts can be therapeutic, like making friendship bracelets or decorating picture frames.
  • Writing: Encourage them to keep a journal or write stories to express their thoughts and emotions. This may be tough and too hard for younger kids, so if this isn’t right for your kiddo, no worries don’t push it on them!
Share Quality Time:

Spending quality time together can help your kids feel valued and supported. It also allows them to relax and enjoy the company of family members. Family Meals and use this time to discuss their day and connect. Read a book to them, or play a boardgame.

Address Their Emotional Needs:

Finally, acknowledge and address any emotional or psychological needs your kids may have. The transition from school to home can sometimes be challenging, and offering support is essential. Validate Their Feelings and let them know that it’s okay to feel tired, stressed, or overwhelmed. Offer Reassurance provide comfort especially if they had a tough day at school.

Helping your kids wind down after school is all about creating a balanced routine that promotes relaxation and supports their well-being.  Plus, it makes it much easier for the whole family to have a relaxing evening and sets them up for another successful day tomorrow!

Remember, every child is different, so finding what works best for your family might take some time. With patience and consistency, you’ll create a peaceful environment that helps your kids thrive.

Daycare or preschool is your little ones’ first step on the education journey!  It’s an essential place for children to develop educational and social skills and build self-confidence. Here are some things to look out for when choosing a daycare provider, and what to look for when choosing a daycare?

What to look for when choosing a daycare?

It can be overwhelming to know where to begin when starting to sit down to look at options. When first starting to look at daycares in your area, here are a few things to consider looking into before you book a visit:

  • Location, how does it work for you? Close to home or close to work?
  • Look for a daycare that offers diverse activities throughout the week. A good mix of play, learning, and physical activities can keep your child engaged and aid their overall development.
  • Appropriately qualified teachers
  • Music, physical activities (indoors & outdoors)
  • A menu that works for your family
  • Good ratings from other parents.
  • Each State or province will have its own regulations and governing bodies; you can check your area for more details.
  • If you want to select unregulated daycare providers, make yourself aware of the pros and cons: Parents are responsible for monitoring all aspects—including quality, health, and safety—and there is no public oversight (except when a complaint is made against a care provider).
Do they offer part-time or full-time options that work for you?

Your personal circumstance will determine whether you want full time or part time childcare, as well as what works best for your child. Make sure the daycare has the best options available for you, and whether you require flexibility within this.

Are there certain questions I should ask at my daycare visit?

Before your visit, have a checklist of all your questions ready. Think about your expectations for your child, what you’d like them to get out of daycare, and how the childcare works for your family and schedule. Here are a few good questions to begin:

  • What is the ratio of children to educators?
  • How many times do the children go outside during each day?
  • What do you offer in your day? What is the ratio of free play/ naps/ structured activities?
  • What are your drop-off/pick-up policies and times?
  • What is your policy on what we need to provide – name labels? Diapers? Food?
  • Do you share a weekly menu?
  • Do all staff have pediatric first aid training?
  • Will my child have a dedicated person looking after them?
  • What is your sick policy?
  • What is your payment policy? (do we pay for holidays? Can you pay by credit etc.)
  • How do you communicate with parents?
What to look out for when visiting daycare facilities, what should a daycare look like?

The center should feel spacious, airy, colorful, and clean. Facilities to look out for should include:

  • Outdoor play area (depending on where you live, check for shade and that the area can be used in all seasons etc.)
  • Does the pick-up and drop-off area provide parking and easy access?
  • Age-appropriate wash facilities
  • A clean, well-labeled changing area
  • Quiet area “cozy corner”
  • Check where kids will sleep, and that the cots are clean
  • Clean & safe kitchen, ask to see where food is prepared to ensure it’s clean and well labeled
  • Plenty of toys, books, and role-play activities
What should I expect of the staff?

All staff should be friendly, approachable, well-qualified, and communicative. But overall, this is a gut feeling you’ll get during your visit. Remember that you’re leaving you’re leaving your baby or toddler with them, so you should have minimal hesitation about them.

How much communication should I expect to get from daycare?

As a parent, you’ll want to know exactly what’s happening at daycare. Ensure you understand how they will communicate with you, how often, and what information you’ll receive. This could include:

What did they eat that day? How many bottles were provided, and how much did they take?

  • What did they eat that day? How many bottles were provided, and how much did they take?
  • How long and how well they slept
  • How many wet/ soiled diapers
  • Any special activities they did
  • Anything that made them upset that day
  • Any bumps, bruises or accidents (especially as they start to walk, it’s inevitable)

Starting daycare is a big deal, and you have every right to get all questions answered. Any good daycare will be welcoming and excited to answer any questions, show you the facilities, and provide you with menus, policies, reviews, qualifications, and more.

Ask for references!

Ask other parents in the area; they’ll happily provide honest opinions on daycare centers. Best of luck finding the perfect area for your little one; they’ll be spending a lot of their day there, so it must be a good fit. Once you find the perfect daycare, they’ll feel like family!

In recent years, homeschooling has surged in popularity, driven by various factors, from flexibility in education to customization of learning experiences. While homeschooling can be very beneficial, it also brings forth a unique challenge: setting boundaries between homeschooling and personal life. Finding this balance is crucial for students’ academic success and the well-being of parents who manage the homeschooling journey and the family as a whole. Here’s a closer look at how to effectively balance homeschooling and life.

Understanding the Need for Boundaries:

Homeschooling blurs the lines between home and school environments, creating a situation where work and personal life can easily overlap and become awkward for kids and parents. This overlap can lead to burnout, stress, and a feeling of being constantly “on duty.” Recognizing the need for boundaries is the first step in maintaining a successful homeschooling experience.

How to Set Boundaries with Homeschooling:

Establish Clear Daily Routines:
Define specific times for homeschooling activities and stick to them as much as possible. This helps maintain a sense of structure, which kids thrive on, and communicates to kids and parents when it’s time to focus on academics and when it’s time to relax or engage in other activities.

Designate a Homeschooling Space:
Create a dedicated area in your home for homeschooling. This space should be free from distractions and equipped with all necessary supplies. When homeschooling time is over, leave this space to signify the end of the school day.

These labels can make your homeschooling space feel special 😊

Schedule Breaks and Free Time:
Breaks are essential for kids to recharge, and recharging helps kids maintain productivity, just like recess in a traditional school setting. Add breaks into the schedule and use this time to unwind or attend to personal tasks and chores on your to-do list too.

Communicate Expectations:
Clearly communicate with your children about balancing homeschooling and life you aim for and why it is important. This helps manage expectations and reduces conflicts related to homeschooling and personal time. Keeping the family on the same page about the difference between school and life can eliminate tension.

Prioritize Self-Care:
As a homeschooling parent, it’s easy to neglect self-care amidst the demands of teaching and managing a household. Make time for activities that recharge you, whether exercise, hobbies, or simply quiet time for yourself. You must get out of the house regularly; changing your environment can help recharge you.

Seek Support:
Don’t hesitate to seek support from other homeschooling parents or join communities where you can share experiences and tips. If possible, delegate some homeschooling responsibilities to others in your household or consider co-op arrangements with other families. This eliminates a lot of the burden, gives you great opportunities to get ideas from other families, and of course, gives your kids a fun experience also!

Make sure you label your kid’s stuff for days out to avoid lost, mixed-up stuff!
Setting boundaries is not always straightforward, and challenges may arise along the way. Be prepared to adapt your approach and remain flexible in scheduling and expectations. Remember, the goal is to create a balance between homeschooling and personal life, fostering learning and well-being for everyone involved.

After all, you likely started this journey to find the values in academics and home life and create a good-quality, rewarding life for you and your kids. Finding the right balance is a process that evolves over time. With patience, perseverance, and a commitment to your family’s well-being, you can create a fulfilling homeschooling experience for everyone involved.

Pregnancy is one wild ride filled with ups and downs. While moms-to-be take on the physical and emotional rollercoaster, dads are crucial in offering support and comfort during this exciting time. Here are some practical ways dads can be supportive during pregnancy:

Being the Emotional Rock

Pregnancy brings a ton of emotions for both partners. Dads can be the solid support by actively listening, offering reassurance, and being understanding. Little things like showing excitement about the baby, affection, and endless patience during mood swings make a difference.

Book Prenatal Classes & Learn Together

Getting informed about pregnancy can strengthen the bond between couples.  Hop online or call and research prenatal classes in your area to find out the details. These classes book quickly, so check the dates and confirm with the mother-to-be; she’ll melt in admiration as you share your research and take this off her to-do list.

Sharing this knowledge not only preps dads for what’s coming but also builds teamwork and understanding. If you read a book or something interesting about baby, share this with her!

Household tasks: change the bedding!

From chores to running errands, dads can ease the load for their pregnant partners. Simple stuff like cooking healthy meals, doing laundry, and keeping the house in order greatly reduces stress and gives mom-to-be a chance to rest and focus on herself.

Think of the most challenging tasks she typically does and take those off her list. For example, changing the bedding can be a very difficult, cumbersome task—everyone knows that, and it’s even harder when pregnant and exhausted! Everyone also knows how much better you sleep on fresh, cool, clean sheets. Your partner is probably more exhausted than ever, so it’s time to step in and help.

Attend Appointments – Including All Directions and Parking!

Attending prenatal check-ups and ultrasound scans is a fantastic way for dads to connect with the pregnancy journey. It shows unity and gives dads the chance to ask questions, bond with the healthcare provider, and get updates about the baby firsthand. If possible, don’t miss these appointments!

Take on the role of figuring out where exactly to go, how to get there and the best place to park. Remember the doctors name, have health cards ready and bring a notebook/pen.

Encouraging Self-Care

Encouraging self-care is crucial during pregnancy. Instead of nagging about healthy habits like exercise and good nutrition, offering support and avoiding unsolicited advice is better. You can help your partner feel pampered by offering massages, setting up a relaxing bath, or getting her an extra pillow as her body changes.

Make Healthy Habits Simple for Her

To ensure she stays hydrated, you can prepare jugs of water with lemon wedges and keep them easily accessible for her. Additionally, consider cooking some of her favorite meals or providing her favorite cut veggies as a snack when she’s too tired to prepare them herself.

Bonding with the Baby

Pregnancy is the perfect time for dads to start bonding with their unborn child. Talking to the baby, feeling kicks, and showing your excitement are all meaningful ways to establish that connection early on. Planning for the baby’s arrival together, like setting up the nursery, also amps the excitement.

Treat your mother-to-be with a special gift for baby. It shows you’re excited and have been thinking about them ♥ Here are some adorable Baby Labels – as dad, you likely know the baby’s gender and name, you can be the first to surprise her with a custom gift.

We love the idea of the Baby Name Labels to surprise her with a practical and thoughtful gift.

Rolling with the Punches

Every pregnancy is different, and dads can show their support by being flexible and adaptable. This could mean adjusting schedules, giving extra help when needed, or being ready for unexpected birth plan changes. A willingness to adapt shows commitment and readiness to tackle parenting together.

Be the One to Set Expectations with Friends and Family

As the big day approaches, step up and be the head of communication. Get into the habit early of politely telling friends and family that you’ll let them know as soon as something happens, rather than them constantly asking or nagging your wife about “any news.”

Get the Party Started!

From the first ultrasound to baby showers and beyond, dads can actively participate in celebrating all the milestones along the way. Your mother-to-be has likely planned all the nursery details and decor, the birth plan, color palettes or themes, photos, etc. Help her out by showing genuine enthusiasm and ask her what tasks you can assist with (always ask; don’t take too much of this on yourself; she’s got it all planned, after all)

Being There, Completely

Above all, being physically and emotionally present is the most valuable gift dads can offer during pregnancy. Showing up, being involved, and demonstrating unwavering love and support create a nurturing environment so both partners can thrive as they prepare to welcome their new addition to the family.

Dads greatly impact the pregnancy experience by being supportive, involved, and attentive to their partner’s needs. By embracing this role with love and dedication, dads strengthen their relationship with their partners and can lay the groundwork for a positive and connected start to parenthood together.

Ok mamas, this is a great post to forward along to the men in your life! 😏

With the back-to-school rush just around the corner, parents everywhere are frantically shopping for supplies, clothing, and new shoes. Choosing the right footwear is not just about style (although your kids will likely disagree); it’s about ensuring your child’s comfort, health, and readiness for the school year. Your kids will be spending up to 8 hours a day in their shoes, so it’s really important they fit well – take care of your feet, and your feet will take care of you!

Here are some tips for buying kids’ school shoes.

Tips for Buying Kids’ School Shoes:

Getting the right fit is crucial when buying school shoes. Poor-fitting shoes can lead to discomfort, blisters, and even long-term foot problems. Here are some tips to ensure your child’s shoes fit correctly:

Toe Room:
There should be about a thumb’s width (approximately half an inch) between the end of the shoe and your child’s longest toe when standing up.

Width:
The shoe should comfortably hug the foot without being too tight or too loose. Ensure that there are no pressure points or areas where the shoe pinches.

Heel Fit:
The heel should fit snugly but not too tight. Your child should be able to walk comfortably without their heel slipping out of the shoe.

Flexibility:
The shoes should bend easily at the ball of the foot, allowing for natural movement when walking or running.

Comfort:
Let your child walk around in the shoes to see how they feel, and ask them to run, too; we all know new shoes go fast! They should not experience any rubbing or discomfort, especially around the toes or heels.

Sock Test:
Have your child try the shoes on with the socks they typically wear to school. This ensures a more accurate fit.

Remember, children’s feet can grow quickly, so checking the fit regularly throughout the school year is essential. It’s recommended that you check the fit of their shoes every 6-8 weeks.

Here is an example of an online tool for measuring your kid’s feet. This is especially helpful if you want to buy their shoes online!

Knowing When Your Kids’ Shoes Have Worn Out:

Shoes can wear out quickly with active kids, often before we even realize it. Knowing when it’s time to replace them is crucial for their comfort, safety, and foot health.  Here is how to identify when your kids’ shoes have seen better days.

Worn Outsoles:
The outsoles (the bottom part of the shoe that touches the ground) are the first area to show signs of wear. Look for smooth or uneven tread patterns, especially in high-traffic areas like the heels and balls of the feet. If you notice significant wear, it’s time for new shoes, as worn-out outsoles can affect stability and grip. This is especially important with school shoes and gym shoes, as the tiled floor is often slippery.

Lack of Support:
Over time, the shoe’s midsole, which provides cushioning and support, can compress and lose its resilience. Press your thumb into the midsole; if it feels firm and bounces back, it’s still supportive. The shoes may no longer provide adequate support if they feel flat and offer little resistance.

Visible Damage:
Check the shoes for any visible damage, such as tears, holes, or loose stitching. These issues not only compromise the shoe’s structural integrity but can also cause discomfort or injuries to your child’s feet. Velcro straps can become fluffy and may no longer stick, making the shoes dangerous if your kids feet slip out.

Foot Pain or Discomfort:
If your child complains of foot pain or discomfort, or if you notice any changes in their walking or running patterns, it could be a sign that their shoes are no longer providing adequate support or cushioning.

How to Avoid Lost Shoes: Yes, It Happens a Lot with Kids!

The easiest way to avoid lost shoes with kids is to label them! This is especially important when they have indoor/outdoor shoes, boots for changing weather, and shoes for sports or extracurriculars. Multiple shoes leave so many opportunities for them to get left behind and end up in the lost and found.  These shoe labels are waterproof, sweatproof, and super cute!  They’re fully customizable and stick into the insole of your kids’ shoes, making them easy to spot.

Plus, if your little one struggles to put their shoes on the right foot, these left-right preschool shoe labels are a great solution!

The Importance of Properly Fitting Shoes in Kids

Ideally, children’s shoes should be replaced every 3-6 months, depending on how quickly they grow and how often they wear them. Here are some general guidelines:

Active Shoes:
Shoes worn for sports or daily outdoor activities may wear out faster than those worn indoors or for less active pursuits.

Comfort and Fit:
If your child complains of discomfort or if their shoes no longer fit properly, it’s time for a new pair, even if the shoes appear to be in good condition.

By staying vigilant and regularly checking your kids’ shoes for signs of wear, you can ensure they always have footwear that supports their growing feet. Investing in quality shoes and replacing them promptly when needed keeps your child comfortable and promotes healthy foot development. Remember these tips to navigate the world of children’s footwear confidently, knowing you’re providing the best for your little ones.

Going back to school is a big deal – and it can be an even bigger one if your child is starting at a new, unfamiliar school. We’ve got tips for kids starting at a new school, and strategies to help ease the stress, for both you and your child.

Things to do before your child starts at a new school

As always, you know your child best and are the most qualified person to customize these ideas for them. Some kids will benefit from lots of advance information, while others are better off taking each moment as it comes. Here are some proactive steps you can take before your child sets foot in the new school:

  • Talk it through. This may be especially important for older kids who are more attached to their existing school and need time to wrap their heads around the change. Adopt the role of sympathetic listener and let them express their emotions. Validate their feelings of frustration or nervousness. Later, when they’re in a less emotional headspace, explain why this school is a logical solution and highlight its appealing features.
  • Read about it. Normalize the back-to-school experience by reading picture books like Mooncat and Me or The New Bear at School. Recommended picks for junior students are the middle-school classic Wonder and the award-winning graphic novel New Kid.
  • Do your homework. Surf the school’s website and social media accounts for useful information such as the principal’s name, bell times, newsletters, and important dates.
  • Reach out. Call the school so you can be directed to the appropriate contact person, whether it’s the principal, vice principal or guidance counselor. The school may already have an established orientation process for incoming students. Make a list of questions in advance (with input from your child, if appropriate) and take this opportunity to ask away.
  • Get the first-day scoop. Find out the school’s first-day traditions and procedures. Inquire about your child’s class placement in advance, so they can arrive at school already knowing their teacher’s name and room number.
  • Generate positive hype. Do you know anyone — such as a friend, relative, or neighbor — who attends or previously attended the school? Enlist them to chat briefly with your child and share their positive reviews.
  • Play it up. If the schoolyard and playground equipment are open to the public, take your child there for some unstructured play time several days before school begins.
  • Take a tour. Now that you’ve got all the background information, you’re ready to schedule a tour of the school itself. See as much of the building as you can and help your child locate common areas such as the library, gym and cafeteria. Walk around the outside to find your child’s line-up zone, entrance/exit door and bus pick-up area, if relevant.
Supporting your child on the first day at a new school

There’s bound to be a lot of nervous energy on the first day, so here are a few factors to consider:

  • Travel together. On day 1, you may want to keep things simple by driving your child or walking with them to school. You can work out the transportation details on day 2 and beyond.
  • Gear up. You know best if your child will be excited to start fresh with a brand-new backpack, lunch box and water bottle — or will be comforted by having their well-loved, familiar ones. Either way, label all their belongings so nothing is lost or mixed up.
  • Re-cap some friend-making tips. Give your child a few basic strategies and conversation starters for meeting new kids. Dress them in a shirt with a favorite character or sports team on it, as a head start to finding common ground with peers.
  • Be upbeat yourself. Your child will take their cue from you, so put on a brave face. Be understanding about their jitters, yet firm and confident in their ability to handle this.
How to set your child up for success at their new school

After you survive the first day, here are some additional tips for the days and weeks that follow:

  • Establish lines of communication. You’ll want to connect with your child’s teacher as soon as possible. They will play a pivotal role in making your child feel welcome, placing them with compatible peers, and keeping you in the loop if issues arise. Start by sending an e-mail and ask for an in-person meeting if possible.
  • Send support. A mom friend shared her concern that lunch period would be the loneliest time for her son at his new school. So, she sent a little “love note” in his lunch every day, with an encouraging message. Mabel’s Labels Washaway Lunch Box Notes are great for this purpose!
  • Get involved. Attend school events, such as the “Meet the Teacher” night or Parent Council/PTA meetings. Encourage your child to get involved in school activities such as intramurals, clubs, sports teams, and student leadership.
  • Log in. To ensure your child isn’t left out of anything, make sure you are signed up in the school’s online system for e-mail updates, pizza orders, field trip forms, and fundraisers.
  • Set a healthy routine. This transition will place extra demands on your child, so make sure they are eating balanced meals and getting plenty of sleep. Minimize before-school stress by establishing a solid morning routine that isn’t rushed. After school, do your best to balance out homework and free time.

While starting at a new school can be intimidating, you and your child will get through it, one day at a time. Before you know it, they’ll be settled into a groove, and what previously seemed like a “big deal” will now be their daily routine.

Hey there, fellow moms! As the days stretch longer and the lazy vibes of summer start to fade, it’s time to gear up for that inevitable transition back to the school routine. If you’re anything like me, you know that getting back into the swing of things after a carefree summer can be a bit of a challenge. But fear not! I’ve got some out-of-the-box strategies up my sleeve to help make this transition back to school a little smoother.

Fun ways to ease the transition back to school

  1. Create a Countdown Calendar with a Twist: Sure, countdown calendars are nothing new, but how about adding a fun twist? Instead of just marking the days until school starts, why not make each day a mini celebration? Have a themed movie night, a backyard campout, or a DIY spa day.Not only will this keep the kids excited, but it’ll also make the transition feel less daunting for everyone involved. These activities will also help spark conversations about going back to school, and your child might want to share what they are anxious or excited about. These will give you cues to help them navigate their emotions better.
  2. Embrace the Power of Play: Who says learning can’t be fun? Take advantage of those last precious days of summer by incorporating educational games and activities into your routine.Whether it’s a scavenger hunt at the park to brush up on nature knowledge or a cooking class to teach math and science skills, finding playful ways to learn will keep those young minds engaged and ready to tackle the school year ahead. Brushing up on these skills will also make your child feel more confident in getting back to their new grade.
  3. Host a Back-to-School Bash: Why wait until the first day of school to reconnect with friends and classmates? Throw a back-to-school bash for your kids and their friends to reignite those social bonds and get everyone excited about the upcoming year.It could be as simple as a game of tug of war in the backyard, or a hoola-hooping competition. Meeting their school friends before school starts definitely makes the children excited to get back to school.
  4. Involve the Kids in Back-to-School Prep: Transitioning from lazy summer days to the structured routine of school can be a shock to the system for kids. Get them involved in the back-to-school prep to help ease the transition. Let them pick out their own school supplies, plan their outfits for the first week, and pack their own lunches.Let them pick out their own name labels, not only does this give them a task to get excited, but they’re also learning to organize themselves, a when they pick their own labels, they have a greater sense of ownership and responsibility for their things.
If you have kindergartners, it would be helpful to have them use their new lunchboxes and water bottles at home so that they do not feel overwhelmed when using it for the first time in class.
  5. Start a Family Book Club: Reading is a great way to escape the back-to-school jitters and get lost in new worlds. Kickstart a family book club where everyone picks a book to read together and then meets to discuss it over snacks and hot cocoa. Not only does this encourage a love of reading, but it also provides a cozy way to bond as a family before the hustle and bustle of the school year begins. You can look up your nearest local library for interesting books on starting school.
  6. Set Intentions, Not Resolutions: Instead of making lofty resolutions that are bound to fizzle out by October, encourage your family to set intentions for the new school year.Whether it’s practicing kindness, staying organized, or prioritizing self-care, setting intentions helps to create a positive mindset and fosters personal growth throughout the year. Plus, it’s a great way to reinforce the idea that every day is a fresh start.
  7. Create a “No-Stress” Morning Routine for back to school: Mornings can be chaotic enough without adding the stress of back-to-school madness into the mix. Take some time to create a “no-stress” morning routine that sets everyone up for success.Whether it’s laying out clothes the night before, prepping breakfast ahead of time, or incorporating mindfulness exercises into your morning routine, finding ways to start the day off on the right foot will make the transition to school days that much smoother.
  8. Celebrate the Little Victories: As the first day of school draws near, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of preparation. But don’t forget to take a moment to celebrate the little victories along the way. Whether it’s mastering a new skill, conquering a fear, or simply making it through a hectic day with a smile, every small win deserves to be celebrated. After all, it’s the journey, not just the destination, that truly matters.

So, there you have it, my fellow parents! With these strategies, you will be ready to tackle the transition from summer to school with confidence and ease. Remember, it’s all about finding joy in the journey and making memories along the way. Here’s to a smooth sailing school year ahead! “What on earth are they saying?!?”

It’s a question I ask myself quite regularly as a mom of two teenage boys. It mostly occurs when they’re on their headsets gaming with friends. I’ll hear laughing, yelling, squealing, and then there will be conversations that I swear are in a different language. It’s like a secret teenage code. A code…that I’m about to crack!

As parents, I feel like we should at least have an idea of what our kids are talking about, right? So, with a little help from my kids and a few Google searches, I now know what they’re saying – and so do you! Let’s dive in, shall we?

“Sty”

You know how our parents always called us lazy? Well, it’s like this generation said “Here, hold my Root Beer”. If you overhear your child saying things like… “He’s got so much sty!” or “That’s so sty!”, it’s not an eye infection. The word “Sty” is simply short for Style. Yes, the kids of today decided that a word with only one syllable needed to be shortened even more.

“Bet”

To most of us, this word means making a bet with someone. We were forever saying “Wanna bet?!” to all our friends when we were kids about pretty much everything. Well, these days “Bet” means something different.  It basically means… “I agree”. So, if you were to ask your teen if they want pizza for dinner and they respond with “bet” – it means yes. Why can’t they just say yes, you ask? I have no idea.

“Rizz”

I’m sure you’ve heard kids talking about other kids who have “Rizz”. I asked my boys what it means, and they just said it means someone has “game”, and they can charm people. Then, I decided to do a little Google search and “Rizz” is simply short for “Charisma”. It just sounds so much cooler to say “Rizz”, doesn’t it?

“Gyat”

So, I wasn’t sure if I was going to include this one on the list, but it’s become a common one I hear quite often. “Gyat” refers to someone who has a ‘large behind’ – but in a good way! It’s a compliment apparently. (Who knew?!)

“Mewing”

I think there’s about 18,956 pictures on my phone of my kid “mewing”. Basically, mewing is a technique in which the tongue is placed on the roof of the mouth to make the jawline look better. Google also said the technique of mewing can improve sleep and reduce mouth breathing. Some even claim that mewing can treat speech disorders, jaw pain, and sinusitis. I don’t know if there’s any actual science to back that up, so take what you will from it.

“Cap”

The term “cap” refers to a lie, while “no cap” means “no lie” or “for real”. So, the next time your teen asks if you’re serious, respond with “no cap” and see what happens.

“Skibidi Toilet”

I don’t even think the kids know what this means, they just say it. I think it’s the name of a series on YouTube though. All I know is there’s a “Skibidi Toilet” song out there somewhere and it’s annoyingly catchy and you may find yourself humming it in the shower…

here you have it! Teen speak translated. A year from now, we’ll probably have a whole list of new words we’ll need to learn, but hopefully this helps for now.

If you’ve managed to translate any other words that aren’t on this list – let me know! We need all the help we can get when it comes to raising teenagers!

And on that note… peace out, laters, G2G!

As the new school year begins, we’ll see the adorable “First-day” chalkboard signs, cute outfits, and photoshoots. Many families are embarking on a homeschooling journey. Whether this choice was made out of necessity, preference, or a blend of both, one thing is sure: the first day of homeschooling can also be made incredibly special with a little creativity and thoughtful planning. Here are some ideas to make the first day of homeschooling feel special.

Set the Stage with Excitement

Start the day with a positive and enthusiastic tone. Create a special morning routine that differs from your everyday activities this summer. Consider preparing a delicious breakfast together or having a small celebratory treat. Setting the table with decorations or special dishes can add a festive touch.

Create a “First Day” Tradition for Homeschool

Traditions provide a sense of continuity and excitement. Establish a tradition that marks the beginning of each homeschooling year. This could be a family photo in front of a designated spot each year, writing letters to future selves to open at the end of the year, or creating a time capsule with mementos from the day.

Plan a Special Activity for the first day of Homeschool.

Incorporate a fun and memorable activity into your first day. This could be a nature walk to explore the local flora and fauna, a science experiment that aligns with your curriculum, or an art project to decorate your homeschooling space. Tailor the activity to your child’s interests and let them take the lead in choosing.

Celebrate Milestones

Acknowledge the significance of starting a new academic year at home. Create a “First Day of Homeschooling” certificate or diploma that your child can proudly display. Consider a small, meaningful gift such as a new book, personalized name labels, an educational game, or supplies that excite them about learning.

Foster Connection with Other Homeschool Families

Connect with other homeschooling families or online communities to share experiences and build a support network. Consider organizing a meet-up for your first day so your kids can start the year knowing they’re not alone in their homeschooling and can share the sense of excitement on their first day.

Reflect and Discuss

Take time to reflect on the experience together as a family. Discuss what went well and what could be improved. Encourage your child to share their thoughts and feelings about the day.

The first day of homeschooling is a unique opportunity to create lasting memories and set a positive tone for the academic year ahead. By incorporating these ideas and adding your personal touches, you can make this day memorable, exciting, and full of promise. Remember, homeschooling is a journey filled with opportunities for growth and exploration—all of which can begin on that first day.
